Board Members



images/nathan-schmid-and-family.jpg Nathan E. Schmid - Executive Director:
Mr. Schmid devotes an average of 180 hours per month to SCHC and is responsible for all aspects of locating and developing affordable housing, including but not limited to meetings with local housing authorities, development agencies, potential lenders, potential development partners, staff and elected governmental officials to discuss the need and funding for affordable housing and SCHC's role in providing such housing. Prior to joining SCHC, for the past fourteen years Mr. Schmid worked as an independent life and health insurance broker in San Diego. He has been actively involved with insurance associations such as the San Diego Association of Health Underwriters and the California Association of Health Underwriters. Mr. Schmid has also been a member of the Building Industry Association (BIA) of San Diego for the past three years and has supported the BIA's related nonprofit organization, BIA Cares, which is a volunteer based organization supporting projects and services that assist needy San Diegans. Mr. Schmid, has a child with Cerebral Palsy and, as Executive Director, he is able to further his passion of helping those with developmental disabilities.


George W. Brewster, Jr. - Director, Chairperson, President:
Mr. Brewster devotes an average of 10 hours per month to SCHC and his duties, aside from serving on the Board of Directors, include performing duties as the Chairperson of the Board. Mr. Brewster has been an attorney for 26 years, the last 21 of which have been for the County of San Diego, Office of County Counsel. His main area of practice is civil litigation/personal injury defense on behalf of the County. Prior to joining the County, Mr. Brewster worked as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Iowa, was a JAG officer for the U.S. Navy and worked in private practice. He holds a B.A. in Journalism (News Editorial), a Masters in Communications and a law degree (with honors), all from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. He is a native of Southern California, is married and has four children, the oldest of whom is developmentally disabled.

images/mcmahon and son.jpg Robert A. McMahon, Jr. - Director and Chief Financial Officer:
Mr. McMahon devotes an average of 10 hours per month to SCHC, serving on the Board of Directors and performing duties as the organization's CFO. Mr. McMahon started his career in the investment banking industry where he excelled as a personal producer and was named a member to the John Nuveen Advisory Council for excellence in municipal bond financing. He currently works with Guild Mortgage Company (the only CalHFA approved lender that offers the HomeChoice home loan product to people with disabilities.) Mr. McMahon is a former United States Marine, has extensive experience working with state and local government agencies, and received a commendation from former California Governor Pete Wilson for his work with nonprofit organizations providing jobs for disadvantaged youth. He holds a California Special Education Teaching Credential from San Diego State University and has taught students with severe emotional disabilities, mental retardation, autism and learning disabilities. His son has various disabilities.


Jim Neil Director - Director and Secretary:
Mr. Neil devotes an average of 10 hours per month to SCHC, serving on the Board of Directors and performing duties as the organization's Secretary. Mr. Neil has been active in the multi-housing industry for 18 years, currently serving as a Senior Vice President with CB Richard Ellis in its San Diego Multi-Housing Team (which specializes in helping owners add value to land holdings by navigating the land entitlement process on their behalf). Prior to joining CB Richard Ellis in 2002, Mr. Neil spent 5 years as the Chief Financial Officer for Southwest Affordable Housing where he was responsible for the acquisition, financing and operations of both conventional and low-income multi-housing properties in San Diego and San Bernardino Counties. Mr. Neil also served as Chief Financial Officer for 21 st Century Oil, Inc. where he was responsible for planning and negotiating the acquisition and financing of gas stations and convenience stores throughout Southern California. Mr. Neil holds a M.B.A. from University of Southern California, and is a member of the Building Industry Association and the San Diego Housing Federation. Mr. Neil has valuable and extensive contacts with local government staff and officials, as well as engineers, architects and consultants, to help ensure that SCHC's projects will be given efficient and thoughtful consideration.

Ms. Hermanson devotes an average of 10 hours per month to SCHC, serving on the Board of Directors. As a person with Cerebral Palsy, Ms. Hermanson knows first hand about the challenges facing persons with developmental disabilities, especially in finding affordable housing. Ms. Hermanson receives services from the San Diego Regional Center for Developmental Disabilities and serves on its Executive Housing Board as a client representative. She has been an advocate for the rights of the disabled since the 1970's and has served as a feature editor for Mainstream Magazine, a magazine advocating Disability Rights. Ms. Hermanson has served on the Mayor of San Diego's Citizen Advisory Board, and is the current treasurer of San Diego Democrats for Disability Rights and the Vice President of the San Diego chapter of Californians for Disability Rights. She has served on the board of directors of the Linda Vista Village Mobile Park Homeowners Association. In 1995 Ms. Hermanson earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law and holds a B.A. in English from San Diego State University.


E. Scott Dupree - Director:
Mr. Dupree devotes an average of 10 hours per month to SCHC serving on the Board of Directors. Mr. Dupree has been an attorney for over 30 years. For the past 25 years, he has served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel with the ConAm Group of Companies, a multi-state owner, developer and manager of apartment communities. Prior to joining ConAm, Mr. Dupree was Corporate Counsel with Trusthouse Forte, a British based hotel owner and operator. He holds a BA degree from USIU and a JD degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. He is an active supporter of Rady’s Children’s Hospital and the University of San Diego. He assisted Volunteers in Medicine in establishing its first clinic in San Diego and has been a volunteer with many other non-profit organizations. Mr. Dupree has extensive experience in the acquisition, development, financing and management of multi-family housing. He is married with two adult sons.

Jennifer Villegas - Housing Placement Coordinator of SCHC:
has been working with SCHC for approximately six months. Jennifer is currently attending Cal State San Marcos and has her future goals set on being a nurse. Jennifer is a very driven individual and has been a vital addition to our success, assisting more than 30 English and Spanish speaking developmentally disabled people and their families with successful relocations to much improved housing.
